'By Invitation Only' - September 2014

After the Summer break - We're back with our monthly posts,
and we start with the theme:

S H A R I N G

*

When I think of sharing, an important element for me is
sharing our planet with all of nature and animals,
simply with everything alive.
Which means
sharing is also caring.

I have endeavored to illustrate my thoughts and feelings about it
with some stunning images from
Gregory Colbert, Creator of
Ashes and Snow

which speak to me of what I believe to be essential sharing.

"In exploring the shared language and poetic sensibilities of all animals,
I am working towards rediscovering the common ground
that once existed when people lived in harmony with animals.
The images depict a world that is without beginning or end,
here or there, past or present."
Gregory Colbert

Gregory Colbert, born in 1960 in Toronto,
is a Canadian film-maker and photographer,

but he is so much more than just a film-maker or just a photographer.

He creates feelings,

he creates magic,

his photographs speak for the world,

speak for nature and for a better future.

Love risks degenerating into obsession,
friendship is never anything but sharing.”

“If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in the character
.
If there is beauty in the character, there will be harmony in the home.

If there is harmony in the home, there will be order in the nations
.
When there is order in the nations, there will peace in the world.”

Gregory Colbert,

best known as the creator of Ashes and Snow
an exhibition of photographic artworks and films housed in the Nomadic Museum.
Colbert sees himself as an apprentice to nature.
His works are collaborations between humans and other species
that express the poetic sensibilities and imaginations of human and animals.
His images offer an inclusive non-hierarchical vision of the natural world,
one that depicts an interdependence and symmetry between humanity and the rest of life.

In describing his vision, Colbert has said,
"I would define what I do as storytelling…
what’s interesting is to have an expression in an orchestra —
and I’m just one musician in the orchestra.
Unfortunately, as a species we’ve turned our back to the orchestra.
I’m all about opening up the orchestra,
not just to other humans, but to other species."

SHARING

I certainly appreciate any kind of shared knowledge and life experience.

Albert Schweitzer,  (14 January 1875 – 4 September 1965) was a German - and later French - theologian, organist, philosopher, physician, and medical missionary in Africa....here

The expression "reverence for life" is the key to Albert Schweitzer's personal philosophy. No person must ever harm or destroy life unless absolutely necessary. This attitude permeated everything he did.

  3. Magnifique… this extraordinary show had a very significant impact as I stood for hours inside a freezing cold container on the ward of New York, mesmerized but he images, the movements and the music. When scared or depressed, I take the beautiful book from the exhibition and relive that moment.

  9. What a lovely post. Breathtaking photos and equally thought-provoking words. We spent some time with a troop of African elephants a few years back. Getting to know their rhythms, experiencing the deep rumbles of their conversations with each other - it was life changing. How much we can learn from the other animals we share the planet with. Thanks so much for a thoughtful post. XO

  12. I love the quotes Karin, they are beautiful. As a photographer's companion I am always concerned about "sharing" images without the agreement of the photographer but I know that you are just trying to let more people know about this gorgeous work...
