"Loveliest of trees, the cherry now
Is hung with bloom along the bough,
And stands about the woodland ride
Wearing white for Eastertide.
Now, of my threescore years and ten,
Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more......."

In Memoriam
What grows in the speaker’s breast as spring comes into blossom is regret –
regret that his dear friend is gone,
that spring is a reminder that the world continues to turn and life carries on,
but friends does not return

The unmistakable sign of SPRING:
Flocks of cranes...
...coming from their southern winter quarters...
...heading North...
...passing La Pouyette...
as every year!

A Light exists in Spring
Not present on the Year
At any other period –
When March is scarcely here
A Color stands abroad
On Solitary Fields
That Science cannot overtake
But Human Nature feels.
It waits upon the Lawn,
It shows the furthest Tree
Upon the furthest Slope you know
It almost speaks to you.
Then as Horizons step
Or Noons report away
Without the Formula of sound
It passes and we stay –
A quality of loss
Affecting our Content
As Trade had suddenly encroached
Upon a Sacrament.
Emily Dickinson

In Memoriam
Now fades the last long streak of snow,
Now burgeons every maze of quick
About the flowering squares, and thick
By ashen roots the violets blow.
Now burgeons every maze of quick
About the flowering squares, and thick
By ashen roots the violets blow.
Now rings the woodland loud and long,
The distance takes a lovelier hue,
And drown'd in yonder living blue
The lark becomes a sightless song.
The distance takes a lovelier hue,
And drown'd in yonder living blue
The lark becomes a sightless song.
Now dance the lights on lawn and lea,
The flocks are whiter down the vale,
And milkier every milky sail
On winding stream or distant sea;
The flocks are whiter down the vale,
And milkier every milky sail
On winding stream or distant sea;
Where now the seamew pipes, or dives
In yonder greening gleam, and fly
The happy birds, that change their sky
To build and brood; that live their lives
In yonder greening gleam, and fly
The happy birds, that change their sky
To build and brood; that live their lives
From land to land; and in my breast
Spring wakens too; and my regret
Becomes an April violet,
And buds and blossoms like the rest.
Spring wakens too; and my regret
Becomes an April violet,
And buds and blossoms like the rest.
Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Canto CXV from In Memoriam.
This canto from Alfred, Lord Tennyson‘s long elegy In Memoriam A. H. H. (1850)
offers a more bittersweet take on the arrival of spring. What grows in the speaker’s breast as spring comes into blossom is regret –
regret that his dear friend is gone,
that spring is a reminder that the world continues to turn and life carries on,
but friends does not return

Oh! How beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I needed this!
What did kitty want after all? Do you know?

Andie
No idea, dear Andie! Oskar is fascinated about everything in the garden, everything what moves, and he loves to join me in garden work.....but - to be honest - he's rather useless/hopeless when it comes to pruning and weeding! :)
DeleteYour beautiful images capture the many moods of spring in your charming garden. ( I have garden envy). I love Vivaldi's Four Seasons - it's frequently heard wafting through our house as it perfectly encapsulates the mood of each season.
ReplyDeleteLike Oscar, Hugo (our kitten) is extremely observant. He is fascinated by the smallest of insects, the flutter of the leaves and any bird he can see. This is Hugo's first autumn so he is in wonder with the falling of the leaves.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend. XXX
Thank you for sharing your beautiful spring with us. That sky is so very blue. Your garden is full of seasonal delights and it looks like Oskar enjoys them, too.
ReplyDeleteDear Karen
ReplyDeleteThank you for this joyful and uplifting ode to Spring time. Your garden, Oskar, the return to the migrating birds and your beautiful photos transpose me to your corner of paradise.
Have a delightful week
