Grey November...

....and Glimmers of Light

Grey - Grey and Rainy....

....for Weeks and Weeks!

Stormy weather....

A fallen tree...

....our fig tree which has suffered already from two hard winters.
Very sad.

The only glimmers of light in these grey days....

Nandina domestica

commonly known as nandina, heavenly bamboo or sacred bamboo,
native to eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan.

Despite the common name, it is not a bamboo
but an erect evergreen shrub up to 2 m (7 ft) tall by 1.5 m (5 ft) wide,
with numerous, usually unbranched stems growing from ground level.
The glossy leaves are sometimes deciduous in colder areas, 50–100 cm (20–39 in) long,
bi- to tri-pinnately compound, with the individual leaflets 4–11 cm (2–4 in) long and 1.5–3 cm broad.
The young leaves in spring are brightly coloured pink to red before turning green;
old leaves turn red or purple again before falling.
The flowers are white, borne in early summer in conical clusters held well above the foliage.
The fruit is a bright red berry 5–10 mm diameter,
ripening in late autumn and persisting through the winter,
the spring and even summer (here at La Pouyette)

and...

Oh, wonder - Oh, wonder!....

 *

Due to the lack of sun....

my olives are not ripening.

*

Then - a few days ago....

...a stripe of light and hope on the horizon

and finally....

a bit of sunshine.....

...and blue sky.

But as quick as the rays of sun appear in the sky...

so quickly have they disappeared...

...and we are back to Grey!

  1. Hello, Karin -
I actually love grey days, but too many of them can be quite depressing! I find that a roaring fire, lit candles, comfort food, and fresh flowers all help. So sorry about your fig tree - what a shame. Sending you warm wishes and bright sunshine!

  3. What a blessing for the sacred bamboo. I am sad your fig tree has departed. I hope there is a young one to take it's place. Your images make a grey day sultry and mysterious. I adore the image of the yellow triangular field when the sun is deciding whether to shine or not.

  5. Hello Karin. November is full of grey days, but every so often the sun shines through and reminds us that it's still there. Beautiful shots of both rain and sun in your post. On grey November days, I like to light candles, make tea and stay cozy.

  6. IHi Karin,
I actually like the grey November days and your photographs have a real beauty about them….. it's just sad that you lost your fig tree. I rather like being indoors in front of the fire and seeing the leaves fall { our Autumn is very late this year and this week, the leaves have been at their best }…. and, we can all look forward to the warmer, sunnier weather in the Spring !! Bonne journee Karin!
